The River

The Ayung has shaped this valley for centuries, physically and spiritually. In Balinese belief, its waters carry divine energy from the volcanic gods, making them sacred for purification, healing, and transformation. The river’s banks hold shrines, springs, and ancient stone carvings depicting stories from Hindu epics, turning the gorge into a landscape where mythology and nature are inseparable.

Permata Ayung, The Jewel of the Ayung River, takes its name from this place. Not as a poetic gesture, but as a statement of what this land actually is.

The Estate

What makes this place singular is not its setting but its soul. Each pavilion arrived here with its own history already intact: its own carvings, weight, and story shaped by time in another place entirely. Assembled together above and aside the Ayung, they form something that resists easy description.

A place with a character that reveals itself gradually, to those who stay long enough to notice.

Architecture & Design

Every surface here carries the marks of the hands that shaped it: carved teak columns, ironwood floors worn smooth by centuries of use, doorways bearing relief carvings of figures and foliage from Hindu mythology.

In Indonesian tradition, the joglo is a cosmic diagram: its soaring roof the realm of gods and ancestors, its living space the human world, its foundation the netherworld below. To inhabit one is to sit at the centre of that order.

The Culm Spa

The Culm Spa exists in a different register from the pavilions around it. Where the pavilions carry the weight and warmth of antique teak, Elora Hardy’s bamboo structure is light, curved, and alive in the present tense, grown from the jungle rather than placed within it.

Inside, there is only the sound of the river and the particular stillness that comes from being held within something living.

The River Garden

Lying between the estate and the Ayung, the River Garden is one of the largest spaces on the property. Lush, tropical, and carefully maintained, it is the path that connects the structures above to the water below. Walking through it leads to the Culm Spa, the spring bath, and the river deck. It is where the estate meets the river.

Estate Philosophy

The estate is built for those who value privacy over convenience, authenticity over polish, and a place with genuine soul over one that merely performs it. A world that operates on its own terms and asks you to do the same.

The estate mirrors the four sacred directions of the Balinese compass: the mountains from which the sacred waters descend, the east and the rising sun, the south and the ocean, the west and the domain of the ancestors. A jewel, set deliberately at the centre of something ancient.
